TEMPEST #1 | 2022

Acrylic Paint on Canvas (24"x36")

TEMPEST #1 was created during a series of live demos at local events, using a traveling setup. This piece is part of a series of three works, reflecting the consistency and mastery of my self-developed process. Using a wet-on-wet technique, I balanced each color over the next, resulting in bold compositions with minimal mixing. The six-part palette, including black and white, showcases the full color range with a glossy and bright finish. Each work in this collection was completed in a single session.

The colors and patterns evoke a primal feeling, aiming to bring a sense of calm and balance, reminiscent of the calm before a storm. The name "Tempest" captures the mix of turbulence and freedom I experienced while transitioning from a technical career path to a full-time artist's lifestyle.

The creation process involved applying paint directly with my hands and shaping it with palette knives and scrapers. The wet-on-wet technique is challenging, as each mark is both permanent and unforgiving if a mistake is made. Completing each piece in 2 to 3 hours forced me to focus on essential elements, embodying a minimalist approach. This time constraint pushed me to make bold, decisive moves while prioritizing the final composition.

Each work in this set comes ready to hang with a matte black floating frame, either wired or backed with a French cleat. For more information about this piece or others like it, please contact me at john@skribble.studio .
